Description
Synonyms:
GlycoMark®, 1-5 Anhydroglucitol
An approved assay for monitoring glycemic control in diabetic patients.
Clinical Application
• GlycoMark is an assay reflective of postprandial glucose spikes
• Glucose spikes are commonly associated with failing therapy and/or cardiovascular risk
• A more rapid and sensitive response to glycemic changes than A1C1
• Depicts recent 2-week status rather than 2-month average
• Also useful in evaluating therapeutics targeting postprandial glucose control1
• Recommended as an adjunct to routine A1C testing
• Results available in approximately 24 to 48 hours
In a 2003 study conducted at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, 77 patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes with suboptimal to poor glycemic control (A1C > 7%) were monitored for 8 weeks following initiation of therapy. Measurements were performed at baseline, weeks 2, 4, and 8. Mean % changes from baseline were markedly higher for 1,5-AG compared to A1C, fructosamine, and glucose (*p<0.05). By week two, 1,5-AG had already increased by 57.9%, compared to an A1C change of 4.2%.
