Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and its main binding protein, IGFBP-3, modulate cell growth and survival, and are thought to be important in tumour growing. Circulating concentrations of IGF-I might be associated with an increased risk of cancer, and IGFBP-3 concentrations could be associated with a decreased cancer risk.
Its concentration is measured by means of analysis of a blood sample drawn from the vein in the arm.
Purpose of the test
Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding proteins (IGFBPs) regulate the actions of the IGFs by influencing interactions between the IGFs and the IGF receptors. IGFBP-3, one of the six known species of IGFBPs, is the predominant IGFBP in serum and is present with breast cancer . Compared with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive samples, ER-negative breast cancer cell lines and tumors express higher levels of IGFBP-3. Therefore, expression of IGFBP-3 may be relevant in breast cancer biology.
