Description:
Menopause is the transition period in a woman's life when her ovaries stop producing eggs, her body produces less estrogen and progesterone, and menstruation becomes less frequent, eventually stopping altogether.
Most women go through menopause between ages 45 and 55. In the US the average age for menstrual periods to stop completely is 51.
This profile can assist in diagnosing the onset of menopause. Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
The Complete Blood Count with Differential (CBC) screens for blood abnormalities including red and white blood cells and platelets. The CBC is used as a screening test to check for possible disorders such as anemia, infection, and many other diseases.
Testosterone testing in women may be done if a patient has irregular or no menstrual periods, is having difficulty getting pregnant, or appears to have masculine features, such as facial and body hair, male pattern baldness, and a low voice. Testosterone levels can rise because of tumors that develop in either the ovary or adrenal gland or because of other conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Estradiol is a type of hormone called estrogen. This test measures the amount of estradiol in blood. This test can be used for conditions suspected such as amenorrhea, early puberty or hypogonadism. If you are a menstruating female, you may be asked to provide the day of your menstrual cycle when this test is performed.
The LH and FSH test are usually ordered together. For women, FSH levels are useful in the investigation of menstrual irregularities and to aid in the diagnosis of pituitary disorders or diseases involving the ovaries or testes. In children, FSH and LH are used to diagnose delayed or precocious (early) puberty. LH levels are useful in the investigation of menstrual irregularities and to aid in the diagnosis of pituitary disorders or diseases involving the ovaries or testes.
The Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (14) is a frequently ordered panel that gives your doctor important information about the current status of your kidneys, liver, and electrolyte and acid/base balance as well as of your blood sugar and blood proteins. The Complete Urinalysis Profile screens for a variety of conditions including urinary bladder disease, kidney disease and diabetes.
